German Record Critics’ Award for Kodály production with Marc Coppey

May 17, 2022 | Wencke Wallbaum News German Record Critics’ Award for Kodály production with Marc Coppey

The quarterly and annual awards of the German Record Critics' Award (PdSK) are sought-after prices in the German music scene. The winners of the quarterly awards are included in the Quarterly Critics' Choice ("Bestenliste") of the German Record Critics' Award. The lists recommend new releases which merit special attention for the quality of interpretation and for their value to the repertoire. These lists provide a candid picture of new releases which, in the jury's opinion, are of outstanding importance when judged on purely artistic and audiophile grounds.

Statement of the Jury:
"In 1915, when Kodály wrote his cello solo sonata, performers still despaired of the techniques that were unusual at the time, the high registers, for example, or the use of the left thumb. Today, no cellist can avoid them. The Frenchman Marc Coppey has made Kodály's musical language second nature, so natural and light, so freely he presents it. He lets his wonderfully sonorous Goffriller cello shine in many colours, whispering the most exciting stories or telling them with energetic emphasis. Coppey has congenial partners in the pianist Matan Porat and the violinist Barnabás Kelemen."
(For the jury: Elisabeth Richter)
