Ferruccio Busoni counted Johannes Brahms - alongside Alkan, Chopin, Liszt, and Schumann - among the five greatest composers of piano music after Beethoven. This assessment still holds true today: Brahms' piano works remain an essential part of the core repertoire for all pianists of stature.
With her new Brahms anthology, Jimin Oh-Havenith continues the path set by her acclaimed recordings of the piano music of Robert Schumann - Brahms' mentor and devoted admirer. This album focuses on variations and character pieces, two genres to which Brahms turned with increasing intensity after composing his three early piano sonatas. In works such as the Handel Variations, the Ballades and Rhapsodies, as well as the late Intermezzi, Brahms created milestones of 19th-century piano literature. These compositions are distinguished by their unique handling of piano sound and technique, their compositional innovation, and their expressive depth. That Brahms was also one of the great "composer-pianists" of the 19th century is impressively demonstrated in his highly virtuosic transcription for the left hand of Johann Sebastian Bach's famous Chaconne from the Partita for solo violin in D minor.

Jimin Oh-Havenith nimmt uns mit auf eine wunderschöne Reise durch das Schaffen von Johannes Brahms. Sie beweist dabei eine seltene Sensibilität. Nichts klingt aufgesetzt, aber alle Nuancen werden aufs Feinste wiedergegeben.
Überzeugend sind die Variationen, in denen sie jeder ihre Farbe, ihr Gewicht und ihre fein herausgeschälte Struktur gibt. Exzellent sind ihre Interpretationen der Balladen. Nie verliert sie sich in Details, sie spielt immer mit dem Ganzen vor Auge und schafft mit klug aufgebauten Melodiebögen, mit subtilen Differenzierungen und sensiblen Klangeinfärbungen eine Atmosphäre, die dem Werk völlig gerecht wird.
Bei den Klavierstücken op. 76, die oft in ernsten bis langweiligen Interpretationen zu hören sind, gibt es keine Zurückhaltung: Oh-Havenith erfrischt diese Musik ebenso wie sie den Walzern viel Schwung verleiht.
In den späten Stücken, die keineswegs abgeklärt klingen, gefallen die interessanten Farbunterschiede, die die Musik sehr bewegend werden lassen.

The variations are very convincing. She gives each one its color, its weight and its delicately exfoliated structure. Her interpretations of the Ballads are excellent. She never loses herself in details, she always plays with the whole in mind and creates an atmosphere that does full justice to the work with cleverly constructed melodic arcs, subtle differentiations, and sensitive sound colorations.
Often heard in serious and sometimes boring interpretations, the Piano Pieces Op. 76 show no restraint: Oh-Havenith breathes new life into this music and brings a lot of verve to the waltzes. In the late pieces, which by no means sound serene, the interesting differences in color are pleasing and make the music very moving.
