Prokofiev Sonatas with Franziska Pietsch: contrasting poles united.

Sergei Prokofiev’s two Violin Sonatas, written during the 1940s, embody the deep dichotomy that characterised the composer’s life, feeling and work. The tragic Sonata No. 1 in F minor and the predominantly cheerful Sonata No. 2 in D major appear as two contrasting poles within his oeuvre. Prokofiev’s emotionally intensive melodies also unmistakably emerge in his own arrangement of the Cinq melodies for violin and piano.
