Edition Otto Klemperer RIAS recordings from Berlin, 1950 - 1958

I remarked that the appearance of any previously unissued concert performance by Otto Klemperer is an event for me. Consequently, the Audite set of performances with the RIAS Symphony (later renamed the Berlin Radio Symphony and still later the Berlin German Symphony) automatically earns a place on my current list. Not all the items in this release are new, but those that are not are in much better sound than in any previous incarnations, having been mastered directly from archival broadcast tapes. The performances, dating from 1950 through 1958, are for the most part vintage Klemperer.

De retour en Europe en 1946, Otto Klemperer retrouve très vite sa stature internationale. L'audacieux chel allemand, naguère épris de musique contemporaine et qui, à la lin des années 1920, fit les beaux jours de Berlin, se concentre désormais sur les grands classiques. Captés pour la plupart en direct, soit au Conservatoire de Berlin, soit au Titania-Palast (la salle de cinéma qui fit la transition entre I'ancienne et la nouvelle Philharmonie), ces enregistrements du RIAS de Berlin s'inscrivent dans le prolongement de ceux effectués avec le Philharmonia à la même époque pour Emi: même répertoire, même priorité accordée à Beethoven. Et qui a mieux compris Beethoven que Klemperer? La tenue supérieurement maîtrisée du grave, articulé, tellurique, ne nuit jamais au ciselé des violons. La qualité du son, la richesse de sa résonance s'impose dès le premier accord de la Symphonie n° 2, puis dans l'Ouverture d'Egmont ou le Concerto n° 3. La grandeur vertigineuse de I'architecture se fonde sur les gradations dynamiques les plus précises et la clarté sans concession de la structure musicale. Cˈest par cette mise à distance que Klemperer atteint son but. Les tempos reposés des trois premiers mouvements de la «Pastorale» préludent à un Orage d'une incroyable véhémence, puis à un finale alerte qui s'achève en une apothéose rayonnante. Mais c'est dans lˈ«Héroïque» que le chef donne le meilleur de lui-même, bien plus à I'aise - comme nombre de collègues de sa génération - sur le podium qu'au studio: I'énergie colossale, la concentration fiévreuse, I'extrême densité du geste impressionnent.

On sait que Klemperer adorait la radieuse 29 ͤ de Mozart - et son élégance s'accommode sans danger d'une certaine gravité, tandis que la «Prague» y perd une bonne part de sa luminosité naturelle... La 4 ͤ de Mahler est plus tenue que le fameux studio Emi; dans le finale, Elfride Trötschel trouble par sa justesse vocale très relative et sa voix androgyne, qui confèrent à ce mouvement un côté vraiment enfantin. Enfin, les Nobilissima visione de Hindemith s'accordent idéalement à cette direction ample, propice à l'introspection mystique.

L'orchestre? Sans surprise: solide, réactif, plus investi mais moins parfait (surtout côté bois) que le Philharmonia de la même époque conçu pour le studio. Un ensemble précieux avant tout pour ses Beethoven au souffle brûlant.

These recordings circulated for decades on budget labels and perhaps for that reason are likely to be overlooked or undervalued. They are splendid examples of what Klemperer could do with German repertoire (what could he not?). They are less eccentric than his earlier and later work and of particular value for that reason alone: they have always served as benchmarks, not only for Klemperer but for anyone else in this repertoire. Here is a great conductor at the height of his powers reissued in handsome packaging and improved sound.

Während eines Fernsehinterviews wurde Otto Klemperer einmal gebeten, seinen Kollegen Bruno Walter zu beschreiben. In seinem berühmt-berüchtigten Sarkasmus antwortete er: „Bruno Walter ist Moralist. Ich bin unmoralisch.“

Ganz falsch dürfte Klemperer mit dieser Einschätzung nicht gelegen sein, wiewohl sie eine pointierte Übertreibung ist. Wenn man aber „Moralist“ durch „Humanist“ ersetzt, kommt man dem Unterschied zwischen den beiden Musikern, die neben Furtwängler, Toscanini und Erich Kleiber zu den bedeutendsten Dirigenten ihrer Generation zählten, schon näher. Für Bruno Walter, Jahrgang 1876, waren Musik und Kunst ein Mittel, das Schöne und Gute im Menschen zu fördern. Daran hat er stets geglaubt, auch wenn er in Zeiten lebte, in denen dieser Glaube alles andere als selbstverständlich war. Als Jude musste er nach Hitlers Machtergreifung aus Deutschland emigrieren, ging zunächst nach Österreich, wo er Musikdirektor der Wiener Staatsoper wurde, 1938 schließlich über die Schweiz in die USA, wo er bis zu seinem Tod 1962 seinen festen Wohnsitz beibehielt. Doch als Gast kehrte er schon bald nach Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs nach Europa zurück, reichte die Hand zur Versöhnung und sah es geradezu als seine Aufgabe an, mit der Musik Brücken über jene Gräben zu schlagen, die Krieg und Nationalsozialismus aufgerissen hatten. Solche Ambitionen hatte Otto Klemperer – neun Jahre jünger als Walter – nicht. Auch er musste als Jude in die USA emigrieren, konnte dort aber, im Gegensatz zu Walter, nicht wirklich Fuß fassen, wohl auch deshalb nicht, weil seine manisch-depressiven Schübe es seinem Umfeld mitunter schwer machten, mit ihm auszukommen. Nach dem Krieg versuchte er, an seine ehemals glanzvolle europäische Karriere anzudocken, doch nachhaltig gelang ihm das erst, als er 1959 zum Chefdirigenten des Philharmonia Orchestra in London berufen wurde. Mit diesem spielte er zahlreiche Schallplatten ein, die bis heute Maßstäbe setzen. 1973 ist er in Zürich gestorben.

Natürlich unterscheiden sich Bruno Walter und Otto Klemperer in ihrer künstlerischen Haltung, Antipoden jedoch, wie der eingangs zitierte Ausspruch nahelegen könnte, waren sie nicht. Denn auch Klemperer war, wenn schon nicht „moralisch“, so doch ein Mann von starkem Charakter und unbeugsamer Haltung. Es lohnt jedenfalls, Aufnahmen der beiden zu vergleichen, wozu zwei aktuelle Neuerscheinungen einladen. Das Label Audite hat auf fünf CDs Studio-Produktionen und Live-Mitschnitte veröffentlicht, die Klemperer mit dem RIAS-Symphonieorchester Berlin zwischen 1950 und 1958 einspielte. EMI wiederum hat in der ICON-Serie auf neun CDs jene Aufnahmen Bruno Walters neu ediert, die vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg entstanden sind – großteils mit den Wiener Philharmonikern, zu denen Walter eine Art Seelenverwandtschaft empfand.

Auffallend ist, dass beide Dirigenten Romantizismen vermeiden, obwohl sie einer Generation angehörten, die dazu durchaus noch tendierte. Die Behauptung im EMI-Booklet, Bruno Walter würde in Sonatensätzen Mozarts im Seitenthema das Tempo zurücknehmen, hält einer Überprüfung jedenfalls nicht stand, zumindest nicht in dieser Verallgemeinerung. Allenfalls trifft das noch auf den ersten Satz der Es-Dur-Symphonie KV 543 zu, wenngleich Walter dieses agogische Mittel zur Gliederung des musikalischen Verlaufs auch hier äußerst dezent handhabt. Doch weder in der Prager noch in der Jupiter-Symphonie drosselt er das Tempo. Sein Mozart klingt energisch in den schnellen Sätzen, gehaltvoll und getragen in den langsamen. Er bevorzugt bassbetonte dunkle Farben (nicht nur im Requiem), verrät aber insgesamt eine durchaus klassische Haltung. Damit kommt er Otto Klemperer durchaus nahe: In der Audite-Box ist er als Mozart-Dirigent mit der Serenata Notturna, den „Salzburger Symphonien“ KV 183 und 201 sowie ebenfalls mit der Prager Symphonie vertreten, die Klemperer mit seinem vorwärtsdrängenden Elan zu einem ganz besonderen Ereignis macht.

Ein Unterschied zwischen den beiden Dirigenten wird allerdings schon bei Mozart evident: Während Bruno Walter Musik, ihrem innersten Wesen nach, auf den Gesang zurückführt und demgemäß auf Kantabilität großen Wert legt, wirken Klemperers Interpretationen wie aus Stein gehauen, voller Ecken und Kanten, erfüllt von einer großen inneren Kraft, die stark nach außen drängt, von Klemperers Formgefühl aber meisterhaft ausbalanciert wird. Das macht vor allem seine Beethoven-Interpretationen so einzigartig, wie man anhand der 2. Symphonie, der Eroica, der Pastorale und der Egmont-Ouvertüre nachhören kann. Vom Orchester her zeigt auch das 3. Klavierkonzert diese Größe, doch leider war der Solist Hans-Erich Riebensahm kein adäquater Partner für Klemperer. Bruno Walter erzielte demgegenüber Spannung vor allem durch glühende Intensität und eine innere Leuchtkraft, die mitunter von ekstatischer Wirkung sein konnte, etwa in Schuberts Unvollendeter, ganz besonders aber im ersten Akt von Wagners Walküre von 1935 mit Lotte Lehmann, Lauritz Melchior und Emanuel List – eine jener Aufnahmen, die Schallplatten-Geschichte schrieb und auch zum Höhepunkt der neuen EMI-Box zählt.

Sowohl Bruno Walter als auch Otto Klemperer machten sich für die Musik von Gustav Mahler stark. Mahler hatte Bruno Walter als Kapellmeister nach Hamburg und Wien berufen, woraus eine innige Freundschaft entstand. Der junge Klemperer wiederum profitierte von einem Empfehlungsschreiben, das Mahler ihm ausgestellt hatte. Bemerkenswert aber ist, dass weder Walter noch Klemperer das Gesamtwerk Mahlers zur Aufführung brachten. Die 6. und 8. Symphonie haben sie nie dirigiert, Klemperer auch niemals die Fünfte, Walter nur einmal die Siebente. Doch ihrer Bedeutung als Mahler-Interpreten tut das keinen Abbruch, im Gegenteil. Klemperers Aufnahme der 4. Symphonie mit der früh verstorbenen Elfride Trötschel als Solistin gibt in ihrer strukturbetonenden Modernität ein Maß vor, das auch heute noch gültig ist. Und wenn Bruno Walter mit den Wiener Philharmonikern musiziert, dann ist das gewissermaßen Mahler im Originalklang. Die 9. Symphonie wurde in dieser Konstellation 1912 uraufgeführt und im Jänner 1938 erneut aufs Programm gesetzt, wobei jener berühmte Mitschnitt entstand, der in der EMI-Box ebenso vertreten ist wie Das Lied von der Erde mit Kerstin Thorborg und Charles Kullmann. Mag auch in beiden Aufnahmen nicht alles von höchster Perfektion sein, die expressive Dichte, die Bruno Walter dank des warmen Klangs der Wiener Philharmoniker erzielt, ist von überragender Größe. Bleibt noch zu erwähnen, dass die Aufnahmen beider Boxen klanglich sehr gut überarbeitet wurden. Speziell Audite wurde dabei erneut seinem Ruf gerecht, diesbezüglich derzeit zu den Besten zu zählen. Der Vierteljahrespreis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik, den die Klemperer-Box bereits erhielt, ist denn auch mehr als gerechtfertigt.

After the second world war, Klemperer never resumed the central place in Berlin's artistic life that he had held when Director of the Kroll Opera House between 1927 and 1931. His late career was centred more on London, Amsterdam, Vienna and Budapest rather than Berlin. Klemperer conducted the Berlin Philharmonic for a few engagements in the 1950s, but his main Berlin appearances during that decade were with the RIAS Symphony Orchestra (later called the Radio-Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and now known as the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin). Audite have conveniently brought together the surviving recorded evidence of this partnership, mainly devoted to the classical repertoire. Almost everything Klemperer performed with Berlin Radio forces is included except for the Clock Symphony, which preceded the live 1956 account of Mahler's Fourth Symphony: the tape of the Haydn was scrubbed. Live performances (some with applause) are interspersed with studio accounts. The performances are edited from the original RIAS tapes (nowadays Deutschlandradio Kultur). Some of these recordings have been released previously, but this set is superior in all respects to earlier releases.

The second volume of Peter Heyworth's biography of Klemperer (Otto Klemperer – his life and times, Cambridge University Press, 1996), which has detailed information on the conductor's concert appearances, barely mentions these performances. The implication is that the Berlin outings were minor affairs within the totality of Klemperer's post-war career. A different perspective is offered in Habakuk Traber's booklet notes. These provide a detailed interpretative commentary on the performances, concluding that they "surely rank amongst the most important documents of cultural rebuilding in post-war Germany." These opposing positions are, to my mind, both incorrect. The performances were worth issuing because they illuminate Klemperer's conducting practice in his core repertoire. This suggests that Heyworth was remiss in giving them short shrift. On the other hand, Traber's case is one of special pleading. While the recordings are musically valuable, they can hardly be said to occupy the cultural position he ascribes to them.

The Mozart recordings were all made within a few days in late 1950. They document Klemperer's first encounter with the RIAS Symphony Orchestra. Listeners expecting to hear the conductor's late monumental style and steady pacing in these works will be surprised at the swiftness of some tempi. The main Allegro of the Don Giovanni overture and the first movement of the Prague Symphony, for example, are both bracing. All the Mozart performances are strongly led, but Symphony No. 29 is less ebullient than one usually hears today and the strings of the Serenata notturna compete with booming timpani. In these performances, one senses thar Klemperer and the orchestra have just become musically acquainted. The strings play with keen, precise articulation and contrapuntal passages are deftly handled; but the overall ensemble is not as polished as one remembers from the orchestra's recordings with its then music director, Ferenc Fricsay. The steely sound of the tuttis is wearing on the ears, though the recordings capture a wide dynamic range.

The three Beethoven symphonies are all live recordings. They are similar in conception to Klemperer's various other accounts of these works. The Second Symphony proceeds boldly, with careful attention to wind solos that often take a thematic lead in this work. The Eroica is suitably weighty, grave, and structurally cogent. In the "Marcia funebre", the orchestra seems to be playing slighty quicker than Klemperer's beat and, as the booklet note points out, the ensemble becomes slightly ragged. The finale is classically cogent and Klemperer eschews playing the variations as a virtuous showpiece, much to the music's advantage. The Pastoral is gently bucolic in the first two movements. Klemperer then whips up a dramatic storm followed by an energetic rather than a serene finale. Though they make for interesting listening, none of the Beethoven performances is truly outstanding and the conductor's credentials in these symphonies are better displayed in his Philharmonia studio recordings.

The soloist in Beethoven's Third Piano Concerto is Hans-Erich Riebensahm, a Berlin-based pianist, teacher and Schnabel pupil, whom some listeners may recall from his LP of Beethoven's Pathétique and Appassionata sonatas (Opera 1174). The booklet note supplies no information about him, which is an oversight given his low profile among recording artists. His performance of the Beethoven is certainly worth hearing. He is in accord with Klemperer's spacious tempi in the first movement and delivers a forthright cadenza, which is marred by a few wrong and smudged notes. In the second movement Riebensahm offers a hushed, intimate reading, and carefully shades his arpeggios to allow the flute and bassoon to project their solos. In the finale, he plays lyrically while Klemperer's accompaniment is somewhat abrupt, but this is not problematic because Beethoven's music partly suggests such a tension between the solo part and the tuttis.

Works by Hindemith and Mahler complete these discs. Klemperer of course knew both composers and also led premieres of their compositions. He preferred Hindemith's earlier works and felt an affinity with the ballet suite Nobilissima Visione. This performance of February 1954 is something of a dry run for Klemperer's Philharmonia recording of the work some eight months later. The serious and reflective string sonorities of the Hindemith are well projected in this Berlin performance, along with delicate woodwind playing in the second movement and confident brass chords in the finale. Klemperer was clearly attuned to the restrained warmth and orchestral invention of one of Hindemith's stronger pieces. Mahler Fourth is a suitably classically conceived interpretation of a work that Klemperer programmed frequently. Wistful passages of nostalgic playing are found in the first movement; bitter irony, conveyed through the retuned solo violin, dominates the second movement; the third movement flows peacefully. Despite the soprano's lack-Iustre singing in the finale, this is a well-proportioned, steady and idiomatic performance that provides an appropriate capstone to these recordings.

En 1933, tras regresar a Berlín de una gira por Italia y Hungría, Otto Klemperer se encontró con que la moderna producción de Tannhtiuser de Jürgen Fehling que había estrenado el I2 de febrero en la Staatsoper de Berlín para conmemorar el cincuentenario de la muerte de Wagner había sido sustituida, sin consultarle, por una vetusta, más al gusto de las nuevas autoridades. Además, el Intendente General de los Teatros Prusianos, el todopoderoso Heinz Tietjen, le comunicó que no podía seguir empleándolo en la Staatsoper. El 4 de abril Klemperer hizo las maletas y marchó a Suiza, y de ahí a los Estados Unidos. Al borde de la cincuentena, este prusiano de Breslau (hoy Wroclaw, Polonia), judío, horrorizado al saberse proscrito por prejuicios raciales, europeo de pura cepa, incapaz de entender América, comenzaba un largo exilio. Atrás quedaban los años felices al frente de la Krolloper, sucursal progresista de la Staatsoper, en la que estrenó obras de Hindemith y Schoenberg y montajes de Caspar Neher y Giorgio de Chirico y programó a Janacek, Stravinsky o Milhaud.

Después de la guerra Berlín significó ya muy poco en su carrera. Dirigió escasas veces a la Filarmónica. Klemperer no olvidaba un comentario antisemita, cazado al vuelo por su hija Lotte, de la esposa de Gerd von Westermann, intendente de la orquesta y director del Festival de Berlín. La relación con la orquesta de Karajan era de una frialdad extrema, situación que no pasaba desapercibida y llegó a reflejarse en los conciertos. Trabajó más con la joven Orquesta Sinfónica de la RIAS, la radio del sector americano, dirigida por Fricsay, no precisamente una orquesta de primera, pero a la que Klemperer forzaba a dar lo mejor. Su primera colaboración consistió en varias sesiones de grabación (en la mítica Jesus-Christus-Kirche de Dahlem) entre el 19 y el 23 de diciembre de 1950, en las que registró varias obras de Mozart (poco antes había grabado más Mozart en París, con la Orquesta Pro Musica de Viena). Posteriormente, entre 1954 y 1958, dieron varios conciertos en el Titania Palast y la Hochschule für Musik.

Los frutos de esta relación de ocho años los publica ahora Audite en una caja de 5 CDs, con el superlativo sonido marca de la casa. Parte del material ya se había editado en compacto, con sonido inferior, pero hay varios inéditos. Por algún motivo han quedado fuera la Serenata n° II K375 (estudio, 1950), la Sinfonía n° 40 de Mozart y la Segunda de Brahms del 21 de enero de 1957, publicadas por Archipel. El repertorio refleja el cambio operado en Klemperer: de campeón de la música de su tiempo pasó a concentrarse en los clásicos. Casi todas las obras de la caja las grabó en estudio con la Philharmonia de Legge. La orquesta inhabitual y la intensidad del directo añaden interés (pese a ocasionales problemas de ensemble) a interpretaciones delineadas sobre parámetros conocidos. El plato fuerte es Beethoven y el concierto monográfico del 29 de marzo de 1958, que se ofrece íntegro. Tras una hercúlea obertura Egmont, en la apolínea Segunda Klemperer se desvía de la tendencia habitual a aligerar el Beethoven temprano, y la sitúa más cerca de la Heroica. En el registro EMI de un año antes no apretó tanto en el Larghetto. La soberbia Heroica, equilibrada, de acentos incisivos e intensidad furtwängleriana, es lo mejor del álbum. De la Pastoral del 15 de febrero de 1954 admiran la construcción orgánica, lógica y coherente, el sutil y natural rubato y las gigantescas dinámicas marca de la casa. En el Concierto para piano n° 3 Hans-Erich Riebensahm es un esforzado solista, con bastantes problemas técnicos y sonido opaco.

No desaprovechó Klemperer la oportunidad de tocar obras prohibidas por el III Reich. Antes de dirigir el mencionado concierto de 1954, por la mañana grabó en estudio Nobilissima Visione, de Hindemith, suite orquestal de su ballet sobre San Francisco de Asís, que en octubre de ese año volvió a grabar para EMI. En la Cuarta de Mahler, Klemperer ensaya algunos ritardandi que no funcionan bien. La orquesta no siempre le sigue en los cambios de tempo, y los acentos suenan blandos a oídos de hoy. Elfriede Trotschel, rígida y tirante, insegura, no es la voz celestial que pide Das himmlische Leben. Completan el álbum las grabaciones mozartianas de 1950, casi todas publicadas hace más de 20 años por Frequenz o Hunt, y más recientemente por Urania y Archipel. Las lecturas clásicas, elegantes y armoniosas de las Sinfonías n° 29 y n° 38 compensan la bizarra versión de la n° 25 en sol menor, con un enloquecido primer movimiento.

EMI France has issued Otto Klemperer's EMI Mahler recordings with the Philharmonia and New Philharmonia, made between 1961 and 1968. Klemperer's implacable but visionary 'Resurrection' Symphony with Schwarzkopf and Rössl-Majdan as the soloists is still one of its outstanding recordings and the sound holds up very well. The first movement of the Fourth is spacious but never sluggish, the slow movement flows quite freely and in the finale Klemperer captures the mood beautifully, even if Schwarzkopf sounds too knowing for the soprano solo. The Seventh Symphony is the oddest of Klemperer's Mahler records, with vastly spacious speeds for the outer movements, but in its idiosyncratic way this is an imposing alternative view, especially the finale, blazing with rough-hewn splendour. Filled with cathartic nobility, Klemperer's Ninth is one of his supreme late achievements. So, too, is Das Lied von der Erde, with Ludwig and Fritz Wunderlich as surpassingly eloquent soloists: Ludwig's 'Abschied' is unforgettable. Lastly, there are five orchestral songs, all with Ludwig. The new (2011) mastering sounds as full and open as any I've heard of these records. EMI France deserves credit for including German texts, though the only translations are in French. These historically important and life-affirming performances come in an attractive budget box and represent an amazing bargain (EM I Classics 0 83365-2, six discs, 6 hours 48 minutes).

By the time Klemperer first worked with tile Berlin RIAS SO in 1950, the orchestra was steeped in Mozart thanks to Ferenc Fricsay. Klemperer recorded Symphonies Nos. 25, 29 and 38, the Overture to Don Giovanni and the Serenata notturna and the similarities with Fricsay 's transparent, rhythmical Mozart are clear from the direct, vital performances here. Klemperer next worked with the RIAS in February 1954: a glowing recording of Hindemith's Nobilissima visione and live versions of Beethoven's Third Piano Concerto with Hans-Erich Riebensahm and the 'Pastoral' Symphony. Another Beethoven concert followed in 1958: the Egmont Overture, Second Symphony and the 'Eroica' – rigorous, energized and illuminating. The same can be said of Mahler's Fourth Symphony, live in 1956 with Elfride Trötschel as the beguiling soprano soloist. This scrupulously presented set uses original tapes and the sound is admirable (Audite 21.408, five discs, 5 hours 28 minutes).

Thanks to Norwegian Radio and its Philips-Miller tape machine, two concerts given by Václav Talich and the Czech Philharmonic at the Prague Festival in June 1939 were recorded. Three months earlier, Hitler had visited Prague Castle to proclaim Bohemia and Moravia a German protectorate, so Smetana's Má vlast has a heart-rending relevance for the musicians and audience. The performance is one of such searing passion and intensity that it brought me close to tears on several occasions. Keeping the superlatives under control is difficult: I know of no other account of this work that is delivered with such unflinching power. The circumstances were unique, something underlined with heart-stopping poignancy at the end when the whole audience begins to sing the Czechoslovak national anthem. A week later Talich and the Czech PO played the second series (Op. 72) of Dvořák's Slavonic Dances with an incomparable feeling for the style and pathos of the music. With original spoken introductions for each broadcast, this is an unforgettable document. Sound has been restored with great skill and the annotations are fascinating. Supraphon is to be congratulated on a historic release of the highest artistic value (Supraphon SU4065-2, two discs, 2 hours 10 minutes).

Otto Klemperer has featured prominently on recent lists of reissues and CD bargains, among which Audite's 'Otto Klemperer: RIAS Recordings, Berlin, 1950-1958' has to be something of a priority, with generally warm sound quality and performances that subscribe to the familiar middle-period Klemperer template of 'power and patience'. Klemperer's reading of Beethoven's Second was always a highlight of his EMI Philharmonia cycle and this Berlin RIAS Orchestra recording from a year later is equally satisfying, even though the Larghetto's course lasts a mere 11'46" by comparison with a more measured 13'08" in 1958. Not that you would suspect the difference from a spot check of the movement's opening: it's a gradual process and very much in keeping with the higher intensity levels of the live performances. Similar observations might be made about the Pastoral and Eroica Symphonies, the latter in particular a superbly balanced reading, Klemperer pacing every episode with his eagle eye focused securely on the overall structure, a ploy that pays highest dividends in the last two movements, the finale a triumphant homecoming. Nowadays, so many conductors rush their fences and the music suffers because of it. The Third Piano Concerto features Hans-Erich Riebensahm as a solidly reliable soloist, the performance a good few minutes broader than the one Klemperer conducted for Barenboim in the late 1960s.

I've always had a fondness for the best of Klemperer's Mozart and was happy to encounter his well-judged RIAS renditions of Nos 29 and 38, while the fiery first movement of No 25 (the 'Little' G minor) keeps consistently to the fast lane. Mahler's Fourth, with a rather wobbly soprano Elfriede Trötschel, is warmly and often emotionally played: you can actually hear Klemperer urge his players on. Add a robust account of Hindemith's eminently listenable 'ballet for orchestra' Nobilissima visione and overtures by Mozart and Beethoven and you have a generous sampling of a great conductor captured on the wing, while getting the best from a good if hardly exceptional orchestra.

More Klemperer conducting Beethoven arrives courtesy of ICA, an affable account of the Eighth Symphony with the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra (1955), which serves as a fill-up to the main work, Mendelssohn's Overture and Incidental Music for A Midsummer Night's Dream (also 1955). Again, the comparison with the EMI Philharmonia recording (1960) is telling, not only because of an extra adrenalin boost in Cologne but because you actually get a smidgen of extra music – the 50-second Allegro vivace between the 'Dance of the Clowns' and the finale which is in effect a reprise of the 'Wedding March' that quietens for a brief return of the fairy music.

Andromeda has issued a three-CD set of selected live Bruckner recordings under Klemperer, all of them fine examples of the conductor's uncompromising approach. My favourite among them is a version of the Sixth with the Concertgebouw Orchestra from 1961 (also on Music & Arts CD247) which, although less carefully prepared than the later studio version with the New Philharmonia, has a far firmer grip on the structure, its dramatic contrasts and its strategically placed shifts in pace and volume. This is especially noticeable in the first movement, which is given a magnificent reading. I'd previously bought the Berlin Philharmonic Seventh (1958) and Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra Fourth (1954) on a Europa Musica set (051 054, which also includes a fine Eighth from 1957): both are compelling, the Fourth being one of Klemperer's most impressive Bruckner recordings. A shame that the Eighth wasn't included, because of all the Bruckner symphonies that's the one where we really do need a livelier alternative to the conductor's late, tired EMI recording (72 as opposed to 84 minutes! – and both use the same edition).

Finally, from Guild, a real curio, Klemperer conducting Bach with the Budapest Radio Symphony Orchestra in January 1950. The highlight is undoubtedly a performance of the Fifth Brandenburg Concerto with pianist Annie Fischer as soloist, who is virtually the equal, in terms of elegance, energy and style, to Alfred Cortot on his delectable old pre-war recording with the École Normale. Granted, the other instrumentalists aren't up to much (the violinist Tibor Ney has his off moments), certainly not in Bach's Magnifcat, and neither is the singing of the Budapest Chorus, though some of the soloists are good, notably the ardent tenor Lajos Somogyvári. Klemperer directs fairly fleet performances, which is more than you could say for his expansive, sweetly expressive 1945 Los Angeles Philharmonic renditions of the Air from the Third Orchestral Suite and his own arrangement for strings of 'Bist du bei mir' from the Anna Magdalena Notebook, both of which are cast rather in the manner of Stokowski's Bach. Interesting, though, and the sound is pretty serviceable, given its age and source.

Wenn man von den großen Dirigenten des 20. Jahrhunderts schwärmt, dann spricht man in erster Linie von Wilhelm Furtwängler, Arturo Toscanini, Bruno Walter und Herbert von Karajan. Einer der immer gerne vergessen wird, ist Otto Klemperer, ein Dirigent, der für mich unbedingt in einem gleichen Atemzug mit den oben genannten erwähnt werden muss. Klemperer war ein Bildhauer, der oft schroffe, dunkle Klänge und harte Akzente in seinen Interpretationen bevorzugte, und das in einer Zeit, wo der große Atem Furtwänglers als das Höchste angesehen wurde. Doch hört man genau hin, so besitzen Klemperers atemberaubende Deutungen die gleiche Tiefe und die gleiche Intensität, nur dass er sie eben anders darstellt. Nämlich weniger gefällig. Kein anderer Dirigent hat es fertiggebracht, die Symphonien Beethovens so düster und archaisch zu interpretieren wie eben Klemperer.

Die hier vorliegende Box von Audite mit fünf CDs lässt die Legende Klemperer noch einmal aufleben. Es sind auch hier wieder die Symphonien Beethovens, nämlich die Zweite, die Dritte, die Sechste und das 3. Klavierkonzert, die aufhorchen lassen. Es ist ein gewaltiger Beethoven, den uns Klemperer hier vorführt, mit einer Musik, die wie aus Stein gemeißelt ist. Und dennoch sind die Interpretationen enorm intensiv und emotional. Auch Mozarts Symphonien Nr. 25, 29 und 38, sowie seine 'Serenata Notturna' und die 'Don Giovanni'-Ouvertüre belegen, dass Klemperers Deutungen auch heute noch aktuell und weitaus faszinierender sind, als die vielen kleinkalibrigen Deutungen, die uns heute gerne als das absolut Optimale verkauft werden.

In dem Sinne ist auch die sehr dramatische und unter Klemperer gar nicht so harmlose 4. Symphonie von Gustav Mahler zu sehen. Auch Klemperers meisterliche Interpretation der 'Nobilissima Visione'-Suite von Paul Hindemith vermag durchaus zu faszinieren, während die beiden Solisten Hans-Erich Riebensahm, Klavier (Beethoven) und Elfriede Trötschel, Sopran (Mahler) einen guten Eindruck hinterlassen.

Die Aufnahmen zeigen das RIAS-Symphonieorchester resp. das Radio-Symphonie-Orchester Berlin in Bestform. Technisch sind diese Audite-Produktionen klanglich hervorragend bearbeitet worden und entsprechen dem von Klemperer angestrebten dunkel timbrierten und kraftvollen Klangbild.

Der Name Otto Klemperer steht in unauslöschlicher Verbindung mit einer legendären Periode des Berliner Musiklebens. In den Endzwanzigern des vorigen Jahrhunderts leitete er die Kroll-Oper, eine Dependance der Staatsoper, die vom Repertoire wie von den Inszenierungen her für ein modernes, experimentierfreudiges Musiktheater stand. Nicht zuletzt die hier zur Uraufführung gebrachten Werke Schönbergs, Janáčeks, Kreneks, Hindemiths u. a. belegen die historische Dimension von Klemperers Wirken.

Mit der Machtübernahme durch das NS-Regime 1933 fand die für das hauptstädtische Kulturleben so prägende Liberalität und Modernität ein jähes Ende. Klemperer musste ins Ausland flüchten – seiner jüdischen Herkunft wegen, aber auch weil er politisch "links" stand und damit als "Kulturbolschewist" verfemt wurde.

Auch wenn Klemperer nach 1945 der Stadt seiner frühen Erfolge nicht gänzlich fernblieb – oft dirigierte er hier nicht mehr. Bei den Philharmonikern etwa stand er nur noch 1948 und 1958 für einige Konzerte am Pult. In der Zwischenzeit leitete er mehrfach das neugegründete RIAS- bzw. Radio-Symphonie-Orchester. Die Konzertmitschnitte und Studioproduktionen mit diesem Klangkörper sind erst kürzlich aus dem Bestand der Originalbänder des RIAS-Schallarchivs von Deutschlandradio Kultur und Audite auf CD zugänglich gemacht worden.

Unsere Auswahl aus dieser Dokumentation mit Mozarts "kleiner" g-Moll-Sinfonie, der Ballettsuite "Noblissima Visione" von Hindemith und Beethovens "Pastorale" orientiert sich an den künstlerischen Präferenzen des Dirigenten, am Repertoire und Interpretationsideal, das in der Spätphase seiner Entwicklung immer deutlicher zutage trat.
